Come hear the music play
Sally Bowles (whose name may or may not actually be Sally Bowles, as she’s certainly the type who would change it if she doesn’t like it) is young, promiscuous, and fancies herself to be quite the strange and extraordinary person. At the moment, in this ‘perfectly marvelous’ year of 1933, she makes her home in Berlin, Germany. Although she was born elsewhere, and her German is rather atrocious, you can be quite certain she loves it. A dancer at the Kit-Kat Klub, her life is peppered with scandalous love affairs and other perfectly debauched incidents, which of course she’ll be more than happy to tell you about. But it’s important, you must understand, to never trust a word she says. By her own admittance, she’s a most terrible liar and subject to any number of whims.

More than that? You may be wondering, of course, if this is Isherwood’s Sally as he wrote in his Berlin Stories, or the one that came from the musical or the one that came from the movie. Truth to tell, she’s all of them. None of them. At times an unholy amalgamation of any of those, taking elements from every incarnation of her and the play/movie/story she comes from. But if at a time, she happens to be from a particular universe, it will be clearly marked. And unless specifically noted (or Liza is in her icon), take her as English.

Sally, obviously, isn’t mine. I’d say she doesn’t exist, but she did once, under a different name, and I don’t own the woman Isherwood based her off of either. I don’t own the musical or Fosse’s film. I also don’t own Liza Minnelli, or any of the other actresses/models that may pop up in her icons. Please don’t sue me.
